What Is a Donor Advised Fund?
When you open a DAF, you contribute cash, stock, or other eligible assets and may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction when you make the contribution. You can then recommend grants to the nonprofit organizations you care about over time. Most DAF providers accept cash, appreciated stock, and mutual funds. Depending on the provider, you may also be able to contribute other assets, such as real estate, business interests, or personal property.
Funds remaining in the account may be invested, giving them the potential to grow and increase the amount available for future charitable giving. Individuals, couples, families, and businesses can open DAFs through more than 1,150 providers nationwide, including financial institutions, community foundations, and cause-focused organizations.
How It Works: An Example
Mark and Denise have lived on the Gulf Coast most of their lives, and they want their giving to make the greatest difference in the community they call home. They open a Donor Advised Fund through their local community foundation with a $25,000 contribution of stock that has grown in value over the years.
Mark and Denise may be eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction in the year they fund their account, and by contributing appreciated stock, they may also avoid capital gains tax on its growth. Just as important, the fund gives them time to decide which organizations to support without feeling rushed.
After meeting with the community foundation's staff to learn more about local needs, they recommend grants to Feeding the Gulf Coast, which they have supported for many years, and to a local youth sports league. They name their account the Robert Fund in honor of Denise's father, so every grant is made in his name. They also schedule a recurring annual grant to Feeding the Gulf Coast so their support continues year after year. For Mark and Denise, the fund has become more than a giving account. It is the start of a family tradition of giving that reflects what matters most to them.
This example is for illustration only.
Why Donors Choose Donor Advised Funds
- Simplicity: Your DAF provider handles the administration, allowing you to organize charitable giving through one account rather than managing separate records for each grant.
- Flexibility: You can contribute when it makes sense for your charitable and financial planning and recommend grants whenever you're ready.
- Tax efficiency: Contributing appreciated assets, such as stock, may offer tax advantages, including potentially avoiding capital gains tax on the appreciation.
- Legacy: A DAF can bring your family together around shared giving and help carry that tradition forward.
