Feeding the Gulf Coast is Supporting Families During the Federal Government Shutdown

Find Help Give Support

When a government shutdown occurs, its impact extends far beyond federal offices. It touches the lives of families, neighbors, and entire communities. Missed paychecks can quickly lead to difficult choices between paying for housing, medicine, or food.

At Feeding the Gulf Coast, we are taking action to help ease that burden. Working alongside federal civilian offices and trusted community partners across South Alabama, South Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle, we are identifying areas of greatest need, expanding food distributions, and ensuring that those affected can access nutritious food and essential resources.

More than 34,000 civilian federal employees within our service area are now facing furlough or working without pay. We know this loss of income will create hardship for many families who already carefully stretch each dollar.

Our mission remains clear: no one should face hunger during this time of uncertainty.

Through our network of partner agencies, mobile pantry sites, and food access programs, we are committed to helping individuals and families stay nourished and supported as this situation unfolds. Together, we can keep food on the table and hope in our communities.

Community Resources

For assistance beyond food access, the following organizations may offer additional services and support in your area.

ALERT: SNAP Funding Pause

We have received guidance that the USDA is suspending SNAP benefits as of November 1, until federal funding is provided, or until USDA directs State agencies otherwise.

You can still use any SNAP benefits currently on your EBT card. Additionally, you still need to send in your paperwork and recertify on time. Doing these things will make sure your benefits start again quickly once the pause ends.

If you do not currently receive SNAP benefits, you should keep applying for SNAP during this pause. Agencies will still look at your application and decide if you qualify, but new benefits won’t be given out until the pause is over. For assistance with signing up for SNAP and other potential benefits, please call (877) 833-2550 or visit benefitsenrollmentcenter.org.
